News > First game of 2010 for the ladies

Den Haag - It is a quiet Sunday afternoon, the sun is shining and now and then a bird whistles a tune. It is cold, but the sun is soothing. It is the day of our first lacrosse game in 2010. We are excited but a bit afraid that we don’t remember how the game works. Of course that is nonsense. Some girls had to stay home due to a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever, severe aching, and catarrh, and often occurring in epidemics. Also called flu. Fortunately we still have enough girls on the pitch. In goal: Laura. In defence: Sophie, Astrid, Rosa, Jooske. Middies: Doutzen, Amy, Else, Lisette. Attack: Kate, Ali, Anne.

The whistle blows and as we start off, we find out that the Kannibalz are stronger than we expected. Nonetheless after a few minutes one of our new great talents performs an excellent crease roll, switches hands and from an angle we never knew existed scores the first amazing goal. Go Else!

After a slightly chaotic start we begin to feel the flow of the game. Another 5 goals scored by Kate, Else (AGAIN!!) and Anne, follow, and Laura, our new goalie, performs some nice saves. (unfortunately Amy’s impressive goal didn’t count due to her small visit to the crease). Also Jooske, another new talent, shines throughout the entire game as a strong middie and defender, never losing the smile on her face, that’s how we like it!

The first half is done, and we are up 6 to 1. Not bad, we conclude but as always there is room for improvement. Alize, our new lovely coach, tells us to keep on passing, try to settle the ball and take our time.

We play a beautiful second half in which there is room for 7 more goals on our side. Ali, who has come all the way from Boston, shows us some of her great skills and after a few great assists for the first goals also scores 2 goals of her own! Our defence is strong and solid, when a Kannibal manages to get through, which rarely happens, we have laura to make a nice save.

After all we can say that, after some struggles in the beginning it was a great game resulting in a 13-4 win, which is a great impulse for the team after some tough times in the past weeks. In the talk after the game Else is announced as Woman of the match, congratulations! Doutzen suggests we should ‘keep track of who gets laid at practise’ and we all agree that this a great idea. We return home with a happy feeling, looking forward to our game against Tilburg next sunday!
